Calispel Avenue Improvements

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This section of Calispel Avenue within the City of Newport is well used during all seasons of the year.  Bordering a City park, elementary school and residences, Calispel Avenue has high pedestrian traffic.  The previous roadway section was widened from two lanes to three, and sidewalks were replaced and added to provide continuous pedestrian access through the corridor.  In addition to the roadway improvements, sections of parallel parking were added adjacent to the school and city park.  Street and sidewalk lighting was installed throughout the project to safer nighttime travel for vehicles and additional safety for pedestrians.
 
Coordination with the school, City of Newport and citizens were the most significant elements of the design process.  In addition to design and planning services, Welch Comer provided complete oversight and administration of the construction phase of the project through closeout and worked closely with the funding agencies involved (TIB and CDBG).

KEY ELEMENTS

  • Maintaining access to homeowners throughout construction.
  • Preservation of school sidewalks and irrigation recently installed prior to construction.
  • Completing the project during the summer prior to school being back in session.
  • Conformance to current ADA requirements and pedestrian access.
