Safe Routes to School Plan

Welch Comer Engineers worked with the City of St. Maries, St. Maries Joint School District #41 on the development of the Safe Routes to School Plan. Funding was provided from the Safe Routes to School Program administered through the Idaho Transportation Department. The plan included parent surveys and teacher tallies to identify travel characteristics and barriers to walking or biking to school. The plan identified the Safe Routes to School routes and improvements necessary, including infrastructure around the elementary school that would improve safety by organizing parent drop off and pick up.

The Master Plan was instrumental in the City obtaining grant funding from ITD’s Community Choices program for sidewalk and ADA ramps. The City’s project is budgeted for construction in 2017.

Our Services

It is difficult for drivers to see children trying to cross SH5 to the elementary school.
The elementary school is located on SH5, which presents several safety hazards such as crossings, parking, and loading/unloading.
This nearly non-existent sidewalk on SH5 will be replaced with Community Choices funds in 2017.
