2004 ACEC of Washington "Transportation" Engineering Excellence Award
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Washington has honored Welch Comer Engineers with its Silver Engineering Excellence Award. This award recognizes Welch Comer Engineer’s originality and innovation in the new application of existing techniques in civil engineering for the U.S. 395 Roundabout In Colville, Washington.
The U.S. Highway 395 Roundabout intersection in Colville, Washington is the first application of a modern roundabout design on the National Highway System in the State of Washington. The Colville roundabout geometry is actually designed as an oval, in order to accommodate five approach legs into the intersection
The roundabout will serve as the southern connection to an alternate truck route, which is a future element of the transportation efficiency strategy for
U.S. 395 through Colville. By increasing the capacity and mobility for vehicles and freight via improvement of in-town arterials, the consultant team has helped the city preclude the negative economic impacts of a U.S. Highway 395 bypass of Colville.
In addition to enhancing the traffic capacity, mobility, and safety of this major U.S. Highway intersection, the Colville Roundabout also has been enhanced to serve as an attractive gateway into the city.
